Choosing the right species of fish can be a little complicated, but it is certainly worth your while.
Tropical fish are bright and extremely colourful, but tend to prefer warmer waters, so take into account that your tank will probably require heating. Some species of cichlid are fussy eaters, but setting up a balanced ecosystem is half the battle.

As a general rule, larger fish will often eat smaller fish, so it is a good idea to keep them seperate. Some species - such as the loach - flourish in groups, while others are solitary.
