natives.gif Australia's native freshwater fish - including many species of cod and catfish - make a tasteful addition to any freshwater setup. As they are native to our climate and conditions, they rarely require the water to be heated or cooled, making them an ideal low-maintenance fish. gourami.gif As well as using their gills, these beautiful fish can gulp air through their mouths, allowing them to survive in poorly-oxygenated water. They usually prefer warm environments, and are best kept segregated from other species - gouramis such as the Siamese Fighting Fish can be very aggressive. When breeding, many gouramis will create elaborate bubble nests.

barb.gif These elegant, colourful fish are suited to a variety of aquarium set-ups, preferring well-oxygenated water and a gravel or rock floor. They are typically peaceful and easy to look after, taking a wide variety of food. Barbs are usually quite small - many species never grow larger than five centimetres long - and may be endangered by large tankmates.
live-bearer.gif Ideal for first-time keepers, these fish give birth to free-swimming young, making them easier to feed and care for. Live-bearing fish such as guppies, sword-tails and mollies can often flourish in a mixed aquarium environment. While still freshwater fish, these small livebearers can withstand higher levels of salinity than many other species.
tetra.gif Small and brightly-coloured, these South American fish are ideal for tanks with space restrictions. They are easy to care for, and one of the most popular varieties of freshwater aquarium fish. These small fish often flourish in groups of at least four, and will do well in slightly acidic water.
