Lake Tanganyika Cichlids

lake_tang.gif

Lake Tanganyika is Africa's largest freshwater lake, and the second largest (by water volume) in the world. Its seclusion in the African rift valley means that nearly every single species of Tanganyika cichlid is completely unique to the lake, and highly sought-after in the aquarium trade.

This enclosed ecosystem means that many Tanganyika cichlids are best kept together in an aquarium environment that accurately simulates the rocky waters of their home.

Popular aquarium species include the colourful Tropheus , an algae-eating rock dweller.
