Goldfish & Koi
|
Goldfish are exceedingly popular cold-water fish, due to their small size, ease of care and general hardiness. If looked after properly, domestic goldfish can live for over ten years. They are often kept in garden ponds, and can usually be fed on flakes alone. Koi are larger goldfish, specially bred for their extravagant patterns. |
Goldfish are actually a genetic mutation, an unusually-coloured variety of carp. Originally from Asia, they have been kept in domestication for centuries, and are now one of the most widely-kept species of freshwater fish.
Considered lucky in traditional Japanese culture, the breeding of larger Koi carp has evolved into something of an art form. An international standard of Koi judging criteria has been set up, and enthusiasts take Koi competitions very seriously.
Despite this, they are relatively easy to keep. Preferring cold waters, they will eat a large variety of foods and may live to over 40 years of age. With adequate room and a little attention, Koi can provide a fantastic visual display.
